Reading is located in the central part of the county of Berkshire, about 57 miles from the centre of London. It has a population of approximately 235,000 making it the largest town in the UK. Despite its size, Reading has been declined formal city status on a number of occasions – the last application been made in 2012.
Like most settlements across the UK, Reading has a long and interesting history. During the medieval period, it had strong ties to the monarch through Reading Abbey which Henry I built in 1121 as an intended location for his burial. Interestingly, however, although historical documents confirmed he was in fact buried there, his remains have never been found.
