Farnborough is a town in north-east Hampshire. It is located about 34 miles south west of London, and is home to a population of just over 65,000 people. It is not the largest settlement in Hampshire, but it is well known for its links to aviation.
Farnborough Airshow
Farnborough is famous for the biennial Farnborough Air Show which usually attracts over 200,000 visitors each time. It is a huge event with billions of dollars of aviation machinery on display. The air show takes place at the Farnborough Airport which is also famous for being the location of the UK’s first powered flight back in 1908. In addition, His Majesty’s Balloon Company was founded at the airport back in the early 20th century.
Farnborough Abbey is another interesting part of the town. It is a Benedictine abbey, and is where Napoleon III and his wife are buried. The abbey still functions as it did hundreds of years ago – the monks living a traditional life of prayer, work and study according to the Rule of St Benedict. The abbey is open to the public on weekends.
Commercial Farnborough
Despite its size, Farnborough has a strong and established economy. Some notable companies located in Farnborough are IBM, Lockheed Martin and Toshiba. The town also has easy access to London via the M3, making it a fairly easy commute for those working in the city.
Needless to say, with its ideal location and high employment, Farnborough is a great place to live. It is therefore no surprise that the town’s population will continue to see definite growth well into the future.
